Christian Education/Faith Formation

Faith Formation is the center of congregational life at Brookside. You might ask, “What do you mean by faith formation?”  It is best explained by a story.  “A Pastor was visiting an old farmer.  In their conversation the farmer made two statements. One was that he had read the Bible, cover to cover, four times; the second was that he hated his neighbor.”  The farmer had known the story but the story hadn’t informed and formed his life.  Being a people of faith is more than telling and hearing the stories.  It is letting the stories form and shape our lives.   That is why we say faith formation is the center or our congregation’s life.  We come together to tell and hear the stories of our faith and to let the stories shape and form what we say, think, and do.  Here all ages gather and through story, ritual, and relationships, our lives are informed and formed in the Christian way of life.

Faith Formation

3 Year Old and Under

Our Crib Room/Nursery is staffed from 9:50 a.m.  Parents are welcome to bring children 3 and under to the room before worship or any time during worship that they desire.  Here the young children experience the loving care of adults and teenagers, and photo form relationships with them and with other children.  We also welcome infants in worship, and there are rocking chairs in the narthex where parents can rock their infants and hear the service through the speaker system.

4 Year Old through 7th Grade

For our children 4 years of age through seventh grade we utilize a rotational workshop program for Faith Formation.  Children study one Biblical story for four to six weeks.  Each week in a different workshop the children hear the story and have an activity which reinforces the story and relates it to everyday living.  The workshops are based on the multiple intelligence approach to learning and include art, cooking, games, music, science, storytelling and video.  Each age group has a team of shepherds who guide them to and from their class and interact with them during the class forming caring relationships.  The children also participate in the rituals of the church. They are in worship each Sunday until after the time with children, and they join the congregation for the sacrament of communion the first Sunday of the month.  We also have several intergenerational worship services throughout the year.
